Ted DeBettencourt: I got suspended by the local bar association that shows up when you Google me. I try to create a rock brand around their name to kind of bury those results. I’m guessing it’s changed since then
or, you know, I don’t need the 60-page download. But what are the strategies that you’re doing to help make it so that you show up with your brand instead of the blue dog?

Jason Barnard: Right. Which is a great question. And that the reputation management aspect does come into it. Some people have a problem with, for example, the Bar Association that I don’t want to be very visible and we can push that down the rankings as you would have done for your client. And generally speaking, reputation management agency will create lots of content to try to drown it. That isn’t the best strategy. The best strategy is to find the great content that exists and help that content push up the rankings. And that means simply changing Google’s perception and focus to make sure it understands that
that content is much more important and valuable than to the subset of its users who your audience
than the one it’s currently showing. And we can help them that way. And also interestingly enough, because now Google has what we call Rich Elements SERP features.

You can one blue link and that’s one less thing to control. So we’d have that two pronged approach, one of which we call leapfrogging. The other of which is a creation of rich elements which involves building your personal brand online, which is actually beneficial to your personal brand and your business anyway. So it’s win, win, win all the way down the line.
