The Multiplicative Destruction Effect: Why Strong Content Fails at the Moment of Selection

At an SEO conference (SMS Sydney) in 2019, Gary Illyes from Google explained in detail how the system selects content for display, and the mechanism he described changed how I understood algorithmic competition. Annotation scores across dimensions multiply rather than average, which means a single weak dimension collapses the composite score regardless of how strong everything else is. Brent D. Payne, sitting in the same session, captured the implication off the top of his head: “Better to be a straight C student than 3 As and an F.”

The math makes this concrete. Content scoring 0.9 on three annotation dimensions but 0.1 on a fourth produces a composite of 0.0729. A competitor scoring a consistent 0.7 across all four produces 0.2401. The competitor is selected. The stronger content, which outperformed on three of four dimensions, enters what I call algorithmic extinction: it is never selected, never displayed, never cited. It does not exist in any output the user ever sees.

I call this the Multiplicative Destruction Effect, and it explains a pattern that frustrates every content strategist who has ever produced objectively excellent work that algorithms ignored.

Annotation scores multiply at selection time

When content passes through the Indexing Annotation Hierarchy, algorithms tag it across at least 24 dimensions: entity resolution, temporal scope, geographic scope, standalone score, verifiability, corroboration, evidence type, and others. Each dimension receives a confidence score between 0 and 1. These scores are stored as the content’s annotation profile, and they determine its fitness for selection by every algorithm in the marketplace.

At the Selection phase (Stage 8 of the DSCRI-AGDC pipeline), algorithms query the annotated index with different filters depending on their purpose. Web search, vertical search, Knowledge Graph builders, LLM training pipelines, and AI response generators all query the same annotation set with different requirements. The content with the highest composite score across the relevant dimensions wins. And because the scores multiply, one near-zero dimension destroys the composite regardless of the others.

Pipeline Attenuation describes what happens as content moves through the nine DSCRI-AGDC stages. Confidence decays at each stage, and even a conservative 10% loss per stage leaves less than 40% of initial confidence surviving to the end. That principle explains why full-pipeline optimization matters and why single-stage interventions produce diminishing returns.

The Multiplicative Destruction Effect operates at a single point in that pipeline: the Selection phase. The multiplication is across annotation dimensions at one moment in time, not across stages over the content’s lifecycle. Pipeline Attenuation is about the journey from publication to display. The Multiplicative Destruction Effect is about the destination: the specific moment when algorithms choose which content to present.

Both are multiplicative, but they multiply different things, and both are fatal when the numbers work against you.

Four annotation dimensions that most commonly collapse a composite score

Content can be expertly written, thoroughly researched, technically optimized, and well-corroborated, and still fail at selection because one annotation dimension scores near zero. The four most common killers:

Unresolved entity (Dimension 4). The algorithm cannot confidently identify who or what the content is about. Entity Resolution scores near zero, and everything else multiplies by near-zero. This is the most common gap in content produced by agencies working without a clear Entity Home.

Ambiguous temporal scope (Dimension 1). The content lacks clear temporal markers. The algorithm cannot determine whether the information is from 2019 or 2026, so Temporal Scope scores low and the multiplication punishes currency-sensitive queries.

Low standalone score (Dimension 22). The content uses pronouns without antecedents, references without context, and claims that require the surrounding page to interpret. AI systems cannot quote it directly, so they paraphrase, rewrite, or skip it entirely. Message control disappears.

Missing corroboration (Dimension 15). The content makes claims no other source confirms. The algorithm has no independent validation, so it selects content from a less expert source that other sources happen to agree with.

Each of these is fixable without rewriting the entire piece. But without fixing the weak dimension, the multiplication ensures the content is never selected.

Consistent quality across every dimension beats excellence in any single one

Brent Payne’s formulation was a perfect compression: the straight C student (0.7 across every dimension) beats the student with three As and an F (0.9, 0.9, 0.9, 0.1) by a factor of more than three to one. The C student’s content gets selected, and the A student’s content enters algorithmic extinction.

This is counterintuitive for most content strategists because the instinct is to invest in the dimensions that seem most important: expertise, depth, originality. Those dimensions matter, but they cannot compensate for one dimension where the score is low. The multiplication does not forgive, and no amount of excellence in three dimensions repairs a zero in the fourth.

The strategic implication is that content audits should identify the weakest annotation dimension first, not the strongest. The highest-value optimization is always the bottleneck dimension, because raising a score from 0.1 to 0.5 on one dimension improves the composite more than raising a score from 0.8 to 0.95 on another. The Multiplicative Destruction Effect is why partial optimization fails and why agencies that excel at content quality but ignore entity resolution produce work that algorithms never select. Fixing three dimensions while leaving a fourth at near-zero is fixing three As and leaving the F. The straight C student still wins, and the brands running The Kalicube Process today are finding their weak dimensions before the multiplication finds them.
