Janet Driscoll Miller just presented a session at SMX called “Beyond SEO: An Introduction to Creating Content for Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO).” It received 100% attendee approval, and deservedly so. The session description promises to teach marketers how to “inform AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to recognize, trust, and recommend your brand.” It covers entities, context, semantic relationships, knowledge graph presence, and content structured for Natural Language Processing.
Every single one of those concepts is something I’ve been teaching, writing about, and building technology around since 2017.
I coined the term Answer Engine Optimization (the strategic process of optimizing content for AI-powered answer systems rather than traditional link-based results) in 2017. Not as a thought experiment. As a practice, built on top of Brand SERP optimization work I’d been doing since 2012. The industry didn’t listen in 2017. Or 2018. Or 2019. Then AI assistants went mainstream in 2023, and suddenly everyone needed a new term for the same thing.
So let me be clear: AIO is AEO with a different acronym. And AEO is eight years old.
The industry has renamed the same methodology at least six times since 2017.
The timeline tells the story. I coined the term Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in 2017, and formalized the methodology in 2018 as the industry began shifting from optimizing for links to optimizing for answers. Since then, the industry has produced Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), Large Language Model Optimization (LLMO), AI Search Optimization (AISO), Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO), and most recently AI Assistive Agent Optimization (AIAO), which I coined in 2025 to account for autonomous agents.
Each new term addresses the same core problem: how do you make AI systems understand, trust, and recommend your brand?
I call this Naming for the Listener (the practice of creating terminology that serves the person hearing it rather than the person saying it). And by that standard, most of these terms fail. AIO could mean anything. GEO sounds like geography. LLMO requires you to know what a Large Language Model is before you can understand what you’re optimizing for. AEO worked in 2017 because “answer engine” described what users experienced: they asked a question and got an answer. The name carried the concept.
But terminology debates are a distraction. The methodology is what matters. And the methodology has been formalized, patented, and proven in production for a decade.

Janet’s session covers three areas: the difference between optimizing for search engines versus optimizing for AI (entities, context, and semantic relationships instead of keywords and links), restructuring content using Q&A and Problem-Solution frameworks aligned with NLP, and building brand entities within AI knowledge graphs.
Every one of those three areas maps directly to The Kalicube Process (TKP), the methodology I developed starting in 2015 and have been refining ever since.
The first area (entity optimization over keyword optimization) is the foundational principle of TKP. The Entity Home (the canonical web property that anchors your entity in every Knowledge Graph and every AI model) is the single most important concept in the entire framework. I’ve been teaching entity optimization since before “entity SEO” was a recognized discipline.
The second area (content structured for NLP) is what my writing components call Semantic Sentence Structure: Subject-Verb-Object clarity for claims, topic sentences at paragraph level, and content organized so machines can chunk it confidently and annotate it accurately. This is built into every gem (specialized AI-powered content generation module) in the Kalicube Pro platform.
The third area (building brand entities in knowledge graphs) is literally what Kalicube Pro does. The platform processes 25 billion data points across 73 million brand profiles, tracking and optimizing brand representation across what I call the Algorithmic Trinity (Knowledge Graphs, Large Language Models, and Search Engines).
Janet is an excellent marketer with 25+ years of experience, and her session clearly resonated with the audience. But the methodology she’s introducing as “AIO” has been in production at Kalicube since 2015 and available as a coined, named practice since 2017.
Authoritas independently proved that entity optimization works, and that Kalicube leads the field.
Theory is easy. Independent validation is hard. Authoritas (a UK-based SEO data platform with no commercial relationship to Kalicube) has been tracking AI citation patterns across multiple platforms, and their data tells a story that goes beyond any single methodology claim.
In December 2025, Authoritas published a study investigating a real-world case where a UK company created eleven entirely fictional “experts” with AI-generated headshots and fabricated credentials, seeding them into over 600 press articles. The question: would AI models recommend these fake experts? Across nine AI models and 55 topic-based questions, zero fake experts appeared in any recommendation. The AI looked past surface-level press coverage and found no deep entity signals: no Entity Home, no Knowledge Graph presence, no corroboration from independent authoritative sources. Volume without entity depth equals zero AI visibility.
That study validates the core principle of every methodology being sold under the AIO, GEO, or AEO banner: AI systems evaluate entity confidence, not mention volume. You cannot fake your way into AI recommendations. You build your way in.
Authoritas also tracks a Weighted Citability Score (WCS, a metric measuring how much AI engines trust and cite entities, calculated across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity using cross-context questions). Their dataset of 143 digital marketing experts shows that the top 10 experts captured 30.9% of all citability in December 2025. By February 2026, they captured 59.5%. That’s a 92% increase in concentration in under two months. The HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, the standard measure of market concentration) rose from 0.026 to 0.104, a 293% increase.
I lead that dataset at a WCS of 21.48. Not because I’m more famous than everyone else on the list, but because The Kalicube Process has been systematically building my Cascading Confidence (the cumulative entity trust that builds or decays through every stage of the algorithmic pipeline) for over a decade. Clean Entity Home. Corroborated claims across the Algorithmic Trinity. Consistent narrative. Structured data. Deep Knowledge Graph presence.
The person who coined the methodology, built the platform, and filed the patents also leads the independent third-party measurement of AI citability. That’s the temporal proof chain: coined AEO (2017) → built Kalicube Proâ„¢ (2015-2026) → independently validated by Authoritas as #1 in AI citability (2025).
The real question is whether your brand is building entity confidence or just tracking mentions.
Janet’s session, and every AIO/GEO presentation being given at conferences right now, gets the diagnosis right: AI is changing how brands are discovered, evaluated, and recommended. The shift from keywords to entities is real. The need for structured, NLP-friendly content is real. The importance of Knowledge Graph presence is real.
But diagnosis without methodology is just awareness. And methodology without measurement is just theory.
The Kalicube Process provides both. It formalizes the UCD Framework (Understandability, Credibility, Deliverability) that maps to the entire customer journey. And it works. The Authoritas data proves it works. Fabricated experts with more than 600 press mentions appeared in zero AI recommendations, showing that volume without depth counts for nothing. Their research also uses a Weighted Citability Score to show that AI models consistently cite trusted experts with strong, corroborated entity signals - structured profiles, knowledge graph presence, and verifiable credentials. This is exactly the kind of systematic, multi-graph optimization that methodologies like The Kalicube Process have been delivering since 2015.
What to do if you’re starting with “AIO” today.
If Janet’s session inspired you to start optimizing for AI (and it should have, because the shift is real and accelerating), here’s what the decade of practice behind the methodology tells you to do.
Start with your Entity Home. This is the single most important page in your entire digital presence. If your about page, your company description, or your personal website is ambiguous, hedging, or contradictory with what third-party sources say about you, you are actively training AI to be uncertain about you. Fix this first. Everything else builds on this foundation.
Think entities, not keywords. This is what Janet correctly identified as the core shift. AI doesn’t match keywords. It evaluates entities: who you are, what you do, who confirms it, and how confident the system is in those facts. Build your content around entity clarity, not keyword density.
Cross the Corroboration Threshold. Identify your three to five most important claims (who you are, what you do, why you’re credible). Then ensure each claim is independently confirmed by at least 2-3 authoritative third-party sources. This is what flips AI from “sometimes includes you” to “reliably includes you.”
Build across all three graphs. Knowledge Graph presence (structured data, entity recognition). Document Graph presence (indexed, well-annotated content on authoritative sites). Concept Graph presence (consistent narrative across the corpus AI trains on). Miss one and you leave a retrieval path uncovered. The Authoritas fake expert study proved this: presence in only one graph (press articles) with zero Knowledge Graph or Concept Graph depth produced zero AI recommendations.
Maintain it, because the gap is widening. The WCS data shows that AI citability concentration increased 293% in under two months while the total field grew. The experts who maintain their digital footprint are pulling away at an accelerating rate. If you start now, you’re still early. If you wait, you’re competing against entities whose advantage is compounding every cycle.
The methodology existed before the acronym. The acronym doesn’t matter. The methodology does.
