Topical Authority
Jason Barnard redefined Topical Authority in 2026 as a nine-cell matrix with three layers: Coverage (Depth, Breadth, Original Thought), Architecture (Source Context, Topical Map, Semantic Network), and Position (Temporal, Hierarchical, Narrative). The industry confused Topical Coverage with Topical Authority. Coverage is the entry ticket. Architecture is the engineering. Position is the competitive advantage. Topical Ownership requires all nine cells. Within the Three Questions framework (Who are you? What do you know? How is it helpful?), Topical Authority answers the second question, the Expertise layer sitting inside the Identity-Relevance Loop.
